67 mile one lap Road Race, June 17, Mount Carroll, IL

2006 Tour of Illinois and Wisconsin and WI/IL Rider of the Year event
(Points awarded in designated categories)

The Great Carroll County Cycling Event was a fantastic success this year!  We had more racers participate in the American Bicycle Racing sanctioned race than ever before.  Our thanks go out to all the racers, volunteers, and the great cooperation from the Carroll County Sheriff’s department and auxillary police force for making this the safest race yet!

Look forward to seeing you all next year!

Carroll County Cycling Club

What a great job by the Promoters John and Robin McConnell and Frank Flack, the feed zone workers, the County Sheriffs leading each wave, Mt. Carroll Police and community, Savanna Police thank you thank you at those intersections, Auxiliary Police at the right place, the sag vehicles and registration. It is tough enough to have a race on a few mile course but to have it tour a whole County is amazing. Thanks for the good food, music and vendors after the event.

Wave #1 start was the Human Powered Vehicle categories; all were full or partial faired recumbents. Tyger Johnson was off and alone for the whole distance, giving the County Sheriff lead car a lesson in how fast a bicycle can actually travel.

HPV1, full fairing human powered vehicle

1. 206 TYGER JOHNSON, 66, Dakota IL 2:54:37.9

1. 207 RICHARD NICODEMUS, 60, Orangeville IL 3:40:34.1
2. 262 CARL BEICHEL, 61, Freeport IL 4:45:20.9

Wave # 2 started 5 minutes later with a combined start of Category Open, Cat 3, age 30+ and age 40+.
This group started fast. Who is off the front now? Up cobblestone hill Mt Carroll towards Lanark and onto Chadwick in quick time. 1st crunch time came before Thomsen, followed by a fast trip up the bike path into Savanna. Everyone knew the hills in Savanna were coming, Savanna Police did a great job stopping traffic and grunt if you can, up to a right turn, up a steeper road to a left to gain a plateau. Arrgh, make a right up more, a left more up, where is this ridgeline? This was breakaway hill and the rolling land to Mt Carroll was no picnic. Thank goodness for the water hand ups at the top of heartbreak hill. With the wind picking up and the sun blazing trying to regain the front riders was tough, hanging on was harder. Then Widoff goes off the front and trying to respond with nothing left. Quick left and rights through the rolling outskirts of Mt. Carroll, descend into the valley of a hard right turn, over the single lane bridge, up one last hill to give what remains in these legs to sprint for the finish line. Done! Where is the drinks and food?

Wave #3 started 5 minutes behind Wave 2. Charging up Cobblestone Hill in Mt. Carroll the field stayed together for the most part during the race to Savanna where the total collapse of the field occurred on the ascent up heartbreak hill. Ungaro and Parrish were off the front for most of the race and were always looking behind for the field. How far back, how far back is the field was heard many times? Woodstock Illinois must have many hills to train on since Woodstock residents Ungaro and Parrish rode away with the glory of 1st and 2nd. The field remnants raced hard and sprinted for all they were worth to the finish line.

Wave #4 started 5 minutes after Wave #3. Masters 50 on up and all Women started together. 50+ riders put the speed on early. I bet some Women were in there pushing the pace too. By Lanark 9 riders were off the back of the field. A small group took a wrong turn but eventually made it back to the correct route with Official help. Could have been a signed turn for tour ride. By Chadwick the field was down to half. With most of the male riders looking for rest Corie Berrigan, the lone Women in the front group kept the MPH up, to the dismay of riders falling off the back. Once again, Savanna hill loomed in the horizon and the hill climbers were waiting to take off up the ridge. Damhoff pushed hard up the second section of UP Savanna, Kreutzfeldt was surprised to be away and the chase was on. Kreutzfeldt did an amazing job of catching Damhoff but a little later Damhoff blazed up a hill leaving Kreutzfeldt behind. The split up 50+ field trying to recover from heartbreak hill and stay away from those behind. 60+ Hitch was well ahead of second place. 65+ Jones was also well ahead. Corie was so far ahead of the other Women that she could have taken a short nap but instead appeared to be trying to catch the riders in front of her. New comer to most, Marie Couris showed her speed and strength early on and had a great sprint against Ginger Sides at the finish. Heidi and Pascale also had a great race to the finish. Palmquist, last year powerhouse, had some allergy problems after the start in Mt Carroll but with teammate Stacee was able to finish.
